The Rajbari Bawali
Just over an hour away from Kolkata, oblivious to the hustle and bustle of the city life, lies The Rajbari Bawali – an extraordinary architectural masterpiece which was built 300 years ago and dates back to the times of Akbar the Great. This palatial structure has been lovingly, painstakingly and sensitively restored to create a luxury heritage boutique hotel which opened its doors to the public in 2016.
History books tell us that the Mondals of Bawali were originally Roys. Shovaram, the grandson of Basudev Roy (who lived between the end of 16th century and the early 17th century), was awarded the title Mondal. Shovaram’s grandson Rajaram was the senapati of the Raja of Hijli. Moved by his bravery, the raja offered him the ownership of 50 villages, which included Bawali and Budge Budge.
There are a variety of activities & experiences to keep the guests engaged while some enjoy a relaxing weekend using up the spa and swimming pool facilities, others venture out to experience the rural Bengal village life with guided tours that also includes a village walk, a cycle tour and more. One can take a trip down to the riverside, spend time at the handicrafts factory or even wander the local markets before heading back to the property to experience a magical evening aarti service in the main courtyard – which is followed by a performance from the local baul musicians who specialize in their old musical storytelling ritual which has been passed down since ages. Be mesmerised, be at Bawali!
